ABOUT THE TOOL
About PixelArt Converter: Image to Pixel Art
PixelArt Converter is an online image to pixel art converter for photos, illustrations, and sprites. Adjust the pixel grid, colors, and texture in your browser, compare the result with the source, and export a static image.
Turn a photo, illustration, or sprite into pixel art
The converter starts with an image you provide: PNG, JPG/JPEG, WebP, or GIF. Set the pixel width, choose original colors or a limited palette, and tune brightness, contrast, and saturation before you decide how the image should look. Dithering options add patterned transitions when a smaller palette loses too much shading.
This makes PixelArt Converter useful for experimenting with photo to pixel art effects, simplifying an illustration, or making a still sprite-style image from existing artwork. The preview updates as you adjust the controls, so you can compare settings before saving.
Choose a pixel grid for the result
Use Keep image proportions when you want a non-square result, or choose an exact 16 × 16, 32 × 32, or 64 × 64 canvas for a compact pixel-art grid. These fixed-size options are useful when you are exploring small icons, portraits, or game-inspired graphics with a defined canvas size.
For square canvases, Fit entire image keeps the full source visible and leaves unused pixels transparent. Crop to fill scales the image until the canvas is covered, then trims the excess from the center. Neither option stretches the source out of proportion.
Adjust color, dithering, and image tone
Pixel-art style depends on more than block size. You can keep the source colors, limit the result to 2–32 colors, use the Game Boy or PICO-8 palette, or enter custom colors. Floyd–Steinberg, Atkinson, and Bayer dithering provide different patterns for representing gradients with fewer colors; brightness, contrast, and saturation help refine the source before conversion.
These are direct controls for converting an existing image to pixel art. The tool does not generate a new scene from a text prompt, and it does not automatically remove a background.
Compare the original and pixel art, then export
The Before/After preview places the source and converted result in the same frame. Drag the divider to inspect how a particular area changes, and zoom in when you need to check individual pixels. Preview adjustments do not change the dimensions of the file you export.
Save pixel-size or enlarged results as PNG or WebP. Pixel edges use nearest-neighbor scaling for crisp enlargement. PNG and WebP exports preserve transparent pixels created by the Fit entire image option.
Image conversion runs in your browser
The selected file is read by the page and converted with browser image and canvas features; PixelArt Converter does not send it to a remote image-conversion service or keep an online gallery of your source files. No account is needed to use the converter. When you replace an image or reset the tool, its preview resources are released.
Loading the website still requires ordinary requests for its page and supporting files. That site delivery is separate from the image conversion itself. More detail about image handling and site information is available in the Privacy Policy.
Animated GIFs and other limits
GIF files are accepted as input, but an animated GIF is not converted frame by frame: only frame 0 is used. The converter exports a static PNG or WebP image, not an animated pixel-art GIF.
PixelArt Converter is an image-to-pixel-art tool rather than a full sprite editor. It does not build sprite sheets or animation timelines. For a clearer result at a small pixel size, start with a source image that has a recognizable subject and distinct shapes, then use the preview to adjust the grid and palette.
